this is a vented stave block snare drum, shell thickness 25mm. The shell is in black walnut / maple shell with eucalyptus ply stave inlays all binded together with blue pearl resin,

How its made, 

Instead of bending thin sheets of plywood into a multi-ply cylinder, a stave shell is built like a wooden barrel. Vertical blocks of solid hardwood (staves) fitted, and glued together in a circle, then lathed down inside and out to a round, thick-walled shell.
